Facial Nerve Dysfunction and Paralysis
 
~Zygomatic droop: asymmetry of smile and sagging cheek.
 
~Synkinesis: involuntary movement of muscles or joints accompanying voluntary movements.
 
~Bell's phenomenon: Lateral movement of the affected eyeball when attempting to close eye lid.
 
~Blepharodiastasis: inability to close eyelids completely.
 
~Blepharospasm: involuntary contraction of eye muscle causing firm closure of both eyes.
 
~Blepharoclonus: intermittent opening and closing of eyelids.
 
~Impaired Blink Reflex: inability to blink eyes fully.
 
~Absent or excessive tearing of eye.
 
~Crocodile Tears: tearing of eye when eating spicy foods.
 
~ Loss of ability to pucker lips.
 
~ Difficulty managing food in the mouth – food gets caught in the cheek.
 
~ Drooling.
 
~ Difficulty drinking from a cup or glass.
 
~ Difficulty speaking.
 
~ Loss of taste.

~ Inability to wrinkle nose.
 
~ Pain - especially behind the ear.
 
~ Tinnitus: ringing in the ear.
 
~ Hyperacussis: perceiving sounds as unduly loud.
 
~ Auriculo-Temporal Syndrome: profuse sweating over one side of the face.
 
~ Facial muscle spasms.
 
~ Facial muscle contractures.
